They were mass-produced, and finding one in good condition can be a challenge. Women stored their china and silver in them, as well as any other important serving pieces. Nowadays people use them all over the house, but the original owner would have almost exclusively kept them in the dining room. These pieces were primarily owned by the middle class, and would have been a show piece, not only because the piece itself is beautiful, but the china inside was displayed for guests to see (chalk that up to Americans' insistence on conspicuous consumption). The middle class generally lived in smaller houses (basically a living room, dining room, kitchen, and 2 or 3 bedrooms and a bath) and would not have had a butler's pantry like the wealthy or upper middle classes had. They are very popular right now because they look fabulous painted!

I wonder if the paint you mentioned is sold in the colonies (haha).

I have a mild obsession with this paint color right now, too. My brother bought me a quart of it for Christmas and it's so rich, especially with the wax applied. This piece looks great! I much prefer using a wet rag to distress. Less mess!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04623116360849288035noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7589172193003935381.post-88008389716766854402013-03-09T05:58:51.110-06:002013-03-09T05:58:51.110-06:00What a gorgeous piece...love the color!
