This sweet highboy was dropped off at my shop. The front looked great, but the veneer on the sides was all ripply (is that a word?) and peeling off. Greeeeaaaatt! Well, considering how much veneer I've been peeling lately I thought I might as well get this one out of the way, too. I used my trusty iron again (it really is looking rough and not smelling too much better!) and peeled just the sides off. I recently bought myself a quart of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint (ASCP) because I've heard so much about it. It was my birthday present to myself (if you knew how much I paid for it you would understand why!). One of the benefits of chalk paint is there is no sanding or priming, so of course I was excited to save myself a little bit of work!
I had a vision for this little dresser, but went back and forth with myself (totally like the angel/devil thing on the shoulder in the cartoons! I'm not even kidding.) because I knew what I WANTED to do with it, but I also know what SELLS. I hate having to make that decision, but that's just the way it is. I had a great conversation with one of my friends (who also happens to work for herself) and she inspired me to go ahead and give my vision a go. So glad she did! I couldn't stop smiling when I finished!
Before
Some people have asked me what is under the veneer. It usually depends on how old the piece is. More often than not this is what's under there. Mystery solved!! :) It can be pretty rough so I sanded it with 80 and then 180. It's not perfect, but it is an antique dresser after all. ;)
This is Paris Gray and they were right! No sanding, no priming, and it distressed like a dream (another benefit). I loved working with it, now if I could only find a way to pay half price for it!! ;)
It's a beautiful, soft, light gray, and there's a lot of variation in the color. I love that about it. It gives a lot of depth (which you can't really see in the pics).
These knobs are just gorgeous. I think I've told you before that I love all different textures together and I love mixing old with new. I like the "bling" of the hardware against the aged look of the paint and the dark tones of the wood. Oooh la la! :)
Yum!! These are so great.
I used crystal knobs on the top drawer just because I like that they are a little smaller and a little more subtle.
I like that the top has a more rustic feel.
Love the "backsplash", too (is there a real name for that piece??).
And, of course, I had to line the drawers with this beautiful French typography fabric!
