Headboard Bench in Peacock Blue

I bought this bench, pre-made, from an elderly gentleman who likes to tinker in his garage.  Lucky me!  The only thing wrong with it was the seat was made out of plywood and was in two pieces with all the screw heads showing.  Not good.

Once again, I enlisted the help of my handy man and told him I wanted a wood seat on it.  Luckily he is well connected ;) and got his hands on some hickory hardwood flooring. It's gorgeous and I knew the light colored wood, in it's natural state would look gorgeous against the rich peacock blue my client picked out.

BEFORE

This is after one coat of paint and in process of getting its new seat.   This is truer to the color than the pics below.  I'm not sure why my camera doesn't like to pick up the green in teal/turquoise.

 After

I'm a little sad you can't see the true color in these pics.  I ended up dark waxing it to really give this gorgeous color some depth.  It's so beautiful.

color = Peacock Blue from Walmart (color matched at Sherwin Williams)

I sanded the flooring smooth and gave it 4 coats of poly, making sure to sand in between coats.  Because it was raw wood the poly really raised the grain.  To get a smooth finish you should sand between coats.

She hasn't seen it yet.  Hope she likes it! :)

Antique Headboard to Bench in Antique White

I bought this headboard and foot board at an auction last summer.  I'm not usually one to let projects sit around, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to leave it as a headboard or convert it into a bench.  BUT, converting into a bench required the skill of my handy hubby and he's busy...all the time. ;)

So, there it sat.  I was in our storage unit a few weeks ago and was reminded of it again and thought it was time to get this particular project done.  Craig agreed to work his magic and started putting it together for me.  It was a little trickier because I wanted to use the foot board for the sides, but the foot board was curved on the ends (which makes it awesome, but tricky).  It's a good thing he knows what he's doing though and he made it all work.

On the last bench we did together I had people asking me for instructions on how to do it.  Please don't ask.  I have no clue.  He made supports all the way around for the seat to sit on and screwed it all together.  That's about all I can tell you. ;)

 BEFORE (kind of)

 AFTER

I love that it's simple, but the curved fronts make it so special.  I chose Antique White from General Finishes because it's rather tall and I was afraid going dark with it would make it look like a beast.  The original finish on it was amazing, lots of bumps and alligator skin, so I chose to do the white, heavily distress it, and then dark wax it to bring out all that texture.

I also have to tell you the bleed through was absolutely terrible.  I had to do about 5 coats of shellac.  Ugh!

I found the fabric at JoAnn's and just love it.

It's not perfect but it's amazing!

Dresser turned Bench

I found this dresser not to long after I started painting.  I wasn't very picky then.  I knew the drawers were broken and thought it would be an easy fix. ;)  Well, I never did fix them so ended up keeping it instead of selling it.  I recently did a hutch for myself and it replaced this dresser.  I didn't want to mess with all new drawer glides so I decided to repurpose it.

I just want you to know I have an amazing husband!  Truly, he's spectacular. :)  I told him what I wanted to do and he hauled it to the shop and got to work.  And, he's good at what he does!!  I owe him more than I can ever pay (and for more than just fixing my furniture!)

I am so stinking excited to show you this one!

Ahhhh--it's so adorable!!  Yes, my kids think I'm a freak! :)

The color is Covington Blue by Benjamin Moore.  I actually glazed it once and decided I liked it better before glazing so had to repaint it.  I hate when that happens, but oh well!

I love dark knobs against a lighter color and I love how the glass in the middle helps them not look too heavy.

You know I love a dark top and I couldn't let the opportunity to have a little contrast go, so I opted to stain the arm rails.  Love how rustic they look with the grain.

We had to cut the legs off so it would be the right height for sitting.  And, although I was sad to cut any of them off we left the best part! :)

Seriously, loving this one so much!!
Hope you have a great rest of the week!!

Sweet Little Bench Makeover

Yesterday I officially moved out of the shop and back into my garage. Yesterday also was supposed to mark the beginning of my "break". So, I spent the morning organizing my "stuff" in the garage and then started on another project (that I might be able to post later today, too!) for my stairwell.

I was at my kitchen table and, all of the sudden, I had the urge to paint something! :)

So, my "break" lasted about 6 hours! lol  But, this was something for me, so it doesn't really count. ;)

I bought this little bench out in Wyoming (by my sweet mommy) over 10 years ago.  I was going through my cutsie, rustic stage (what?  you didn't go through one of those?) and adored it because it was pine, and, well, it was cute.  It's sat in many different places in the house over the past decade and finally ended up in the upstairs hallway as a catch all and dust collector!

I recently painted the stairwell and it's getting a revamp, so I thought this little bench better get one, too. I'm not really into the little hearts anymore but I didn't think they warranted getting rid of the poor little thing.  Plus, there's memories attached to it (what?  you don't keep things for any other reason than they have memories?).

I had to counter those darn little hearts that I couldn't do anything about, so I decided on a chic, french look.

(dust and all!)

Love the contrast between the black and white and since it's mine I went with a very chippy look (which isn't for everybody, but it is for me!!)!

I just had to include a shot of him.  ;)

It means "I adore you" in french.

Am loving this wall color, too.  It's not green, it's not blue, and it's not gray.  I will let you know what it  is when I remember the name (I'm totally drawing a blank right now!). :)
