Antique Chest of Drawers in Scandanavian Pink

I found this piece on my local classifieds page and the woman selling it happened to be my husband's neighbor when he was a child!  She was very sweet and said her husband had already started refinishing it, but they were moving and she was getting rid of things.  Lucky me!

It seriously is the cutest little chest of drawers.  When I went to look at it I just fell in love with its size and that's what made up my mind.  She told me it had a mirror that went with it, but it was lying on the floor, missing the mirror, and in pieces, so I didn't have a very good idea of what it looked like.  I was so happy when I got it home and put the mirror together and got it on the dresser.

People always ask me how I find such great pieces.  I have no idea. It just kind of happens.  What I can tell you is that I have become very particular (with the exception of a rare mistake) on what I bring home.  I made a rule for myself that I will not buy it unless I absolutely love it.  I didn't use to be that way. lol

When I started working on this piece I realized the stripper had been left on and dried in places, so I had to sand all of that off.  I'm so glad this piece isn't any bigger than it is! :)

It's all oak and when oak gets old it can dry out which really opens up the grain.  I hate that. :)
I used it to my advantage though, and decided to go "old world" with it.  I could just see it in a frenchy pink with a really worn look.  That's where chalk paint comes in!

I don't use it very often but I love how it layers and that's exactly what I was going for.  I had a lot of fun playing with it and broke every rule I've ever made for myself about painting.  It was very liberating. lol

I'ma very Type A personality (as my whole family will attest to).  I'm somewhat of a perfectionist and I like things just so-so.  I'm no different when it comes to painting.   BUT, sometimes it's good just to throw all of that out the window and to just have fun with it.  You should have seen me with that brush! ;)

I actually learned a lot about chalk paint doing this piece.  I learned what it likes to do and what it's good at doing.  With all that being said, I am still a latex gal. :)

BEFORE
This has to be the worst before pic ever, but it's all I have.  The mirror was in pieces when I bought it so I had to re-assemble it.  I had already started sanding it down when I remembered I hadn't taken a pic yet!  Sorry about that.

 AFTER

I just want to pinch it's little drawers.

I used lots of layers of Scandanavian Pink and Old White.

I mentioned the mirror was missing when I bought it (I did find remnants of it in a drawer).  I already had a little more $ into this piece than I was comfortable with so I opted to do a chalkboard for the mirror instead of replacing it.  I'm so glad I did.  It gives this piece a whole different look and what little (or big!) girl wouldn't love to write on it?!

I used 1/4 inch luan and had my hubby cut it to fit the frame.  I primed it, sanded it, did a coat of chalkboard paint, sanded it, and did one more coat of chalkboard paint.

I almost used white, ceramic rosettes for the hardware, but decided I liked the rusty pulls better.  I like that it grounds all that pink.

Same with the top.  If I had painted this whole piece pink it would have been too much.  I love that that the natural wood breaks it up and gives the eye a place to rest.

The drawers had been painted brown previously, so I sanded them, painted them, and lined the bottom with paper.  You can see the MP is still wet in this pic (No, t's not because I am so impatient!  Wait, yes, yest it is.) ;)

I love the depth layering gives.

I'm not really a fan of pink, generally, but I am tickled pink by this chest of drawers.
  Pun intended. :)

Antique Cherry Desk Redo

My client said she had picked up this desk a while back for $20!  It's cherry, solid wood, and has dovetailed drawers.  What a steal!!  She wanted it for her daughter's room and said she would like it white and pink.  I think I've said before that I don't do pink very often so this one was so fun!  I really enjoyed it and thought it turned out so darned cute!

 Before

It was still solid but the finish was horrible.  It had deep scratches all over it and the top was the worst.  I sanded it down to the bare wood so I had a smooth finish to start with (that sounds funny but you know what I mean ;) ).

From dark and a little dreary to this....

 After

I love the soft pink drawers with the dark wood peeking out paired with the crisp white.  Girly, but not too young.

Ok, for anyone who has not painted cherry or mahogany the bleed through can be awful!  Especially if you're doing white.  This one was no exception.  I started with one coat of shellac, letting it dry for an hour before I did the first coat of white.  Within 30 seconds I could see that #@!* pink coming through.  Seriously hate that--it's my worst pet peeve!  So, I waited for it to dry and then did another coat of Shellac (you can do it right over oil, latex, milk, or chalk paint).  I then did another coat of white and waited until it dried completely.  There were just a few pesky spots where it still bled through so I just did those areas with another coat of shellac and then did another coat of white over the whole thing.  It's a good thing I refuse to let  a piece of furniture get the best of me (knock on wood!). :)

I had these glass knobs from an "ooops" and they are perfect for this little desk.  BUT, I wanted something a little more eye catching for the middle drawer so I chose this awesome knob with the metal overlay.
Don't be scared to mix and match your knobs.  It can look eclectic, fun, or sophisticated-they don't have to be match-y match-y to look pulled together.

I used two different colors on the drawers so when I distressed the darker pink would show but I didn't have to go all the way to the bare wood to get some contrast.

It was so cold in the garage (and I didn't want to use any more propane than I had to) so I brought the drawers inside to paint.  I had one huge mess on my counter from all the sanding I did!  There looked like there was pink fairy dust all over everything! :)  Then I took the drawers in the living room where my hubby was watching TV and made him run his hand over all of them! lol!  Yes, I'm nuts, but he's used to it.

This drawer had a big, ugly ink stain in the middle so I lined it with some left over fabric I had.  I get asked all the time what I line my drawers with and how I attach it.  I almost always use fabric and I use a spray adhesive to attach it.  That way, if for some reason they need to be removed, they can be with no trouble.

Oh yeah, Ania and I made the tissue wreath today while she was home from school.  It's an easy project and fairly quick!  Just leave me a comment if you're interested in a tutorial.  :)

Vintage Vanity in Pink!

Hope everyone had a wonderful 4th!  I was lucky enough to spend it with my family and was, again, reminded of how grateful I am to live in this amazing country we call America!

I've had an idea for a little girl's desk/vanity for a while now, but nothing to do it on.  When I saw this cute little vanity on my local classifieds page on FB I knew I had to have it! :)  She was kind enough to deliver it to town for me (score!) and it was only a few block from my house (double score!).  I started working on it as soon as I got home because I just couldn't wait to see if it would look like what I thought it would look like. Is that wierd?  :)

 Before

 After

I don't do pink.  And, I don't really do a lot of decoupage.

Out of all the furniture I've done I've only painted a few things pink and those were  custom requests.  BUT, I saw this paper at Hobby Lobby and could not get it out of my head.  I just had to put it on something.  So, I broke down and decided it was time to do pink again.

I love the vintage look of this paper so I glazed over the body and the top with Provincial (from Minwax) mixed with mineral spirits (cuz it was 85 degrees today and the stain was drying out too fast) to tone down the paint.  I'm not a big fan of the "dirty" look so I love how using mineral spirits with the stain helps to thin it out so you can spread it more evenly.  I actually just dipped a heavy duty paper towel in the stain and then poured the mineral spirits right on the same paper towel and started rubbing.

I had to ditch the original pulls cuz I just wasn't feeling them.  Plus, I had these adorable pink knobs I was saving and this was perfect.

I added this graphic to the top (using the wax paper method) for a little visual interest.

Here it is with the mirror.  I love how it still has that vintage feel, but is fit for a sweet little girl, too. :)
