Recently my hubby and his business partner bought a building for their countertop business (they had previously been renting a building). It's been exciting news as far as the family business is concerned ( I really am happy about it!), BUT there is no room for me at the new building.
Until I figure out what I'm going to do I have the issue of reducing getting rid of my inventory at our current building. So, I have been pulling out pieces that have been sitting in my shop for a LONG time, simply because I haven't known what to do with them.
This dresser is a perfect example. I originally bought it because I liked the shape of it and the price was right. But, I didn't realize just how big and bulky it looked until I got it home. So, there it sat for months because I just wasn't feeling inspired.
Then along comes this wonderful lady and says she would like to have me refinish it for her. I said, "Sure. Where's it going?" She said it was going in her bedroom, which is gray and white with accents of robin egg blue. Perfect!! I seriously was so excited!! I've been wanting to do something this color for a while now, but just didn't have the right piece. I just love how things come together sometimes. :)
Before
Very dark and outdated!
After
I know I say this about everything :), but I am LoViNg this color!!
It had a pretty piece of pine for the top, so I sanded all the old varnish off (it was really rough!) and then restained it in Dark Walnut from Minwax.
The color is Reflecting Pool from SW and then I stained over it with Provincial (Minwax). *When you use a stain over blues it leaves a little bit greener.
My favorite cup pulls (sprayed with Oil Rubbed Bronze). I also sprayed the flower knobs with the same (they were originally black).
I love how the distressing turned out on this one.
This pic makes my heart beat just a little faster. ;)

I'm blown away!! I would never have thought such a dresser could be transformed like that!! Can I ask... did you prep the dresser at all before painting to ensure the paint took hold? May I ask what kind of paint it was, doesn't look like chalk paint to me. And last question, is it just finished with the stain, then? No varnish or wax? Wonderful job, sorry for all the questions, I'm just blown away! Maryann
ReplyDeleteHello--thank you so much for the wonderful compliment! I did scuff sand the dresser with 220 to make sure all the sheen was off the finish. I actually didn't use a primer on this one and used latex, then stained, then used a semi-gloss poly to finish it. :)
DeleteExcellent info, thanks so much! Your poly - is that the oil-based kind or latex (I use oil-based but it always goes faintly yellow over paint. I don't generally mind that but I'm wondering if you have an alternative). Thanks again! LOVELY! Maryann
DeleteOh my gosh! That is just beautiful. The color is just amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful transformation. Thanks for sharing at Restyled Sundays! Come and see your feature. :)

Thank you so much! :) I will be sure to be there. ;)
Deletecan you expand on the stain portion, I am wanting to stain white chalk paint on my farm table legs to age it and am at a loss. I have a vanity i can paint with latex and would love to give it a old look over the latex please
ReplyDeletethanks
I use a lighter stain over white as dark stain makes it look too "dirty" for my taste (this is purely personal preference though). I use Early American by Minwax over whites. If you are worried about the paint taking on too much stain (which is a bigger problem with chalk paint than it is with latex) you can poly over the top of the paint, let dry, then stain over the poly, wipe, and then poly again to seal it. Hope that helps.
DeleteThis is absolutely Gorgeous! I love it all--the hardware, the color, and the way it distressed! Perfect! Thank you for sharing it at this week's Rustic Restorations Weekend!

ReplyDeleteThank you Theresa--I appreciate it so much! :)
DeleteGood call on leaving the top of the dresser in it's original condition. The separation of colors really helps the unit pop. It also provides more of a contrast for the decorative items on top as well as the wall coloring.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely looooovvvvvveeee it💜Thank you for the inspiration.
