Sewing Cabinet Revamp

I am finally down to the last few pieces in my shop. Ironically this cabinet was one of the first pieces I purchased when I started redoing furniture about a year and a half ago.   I think at the time I was so excited to do something...anything, that I wasn't too particular about what I bought.  Actually, when I went to see it in person I thought "eh", but, being new to the whole buying game, felt a little pressure because I had told the lady I would take it over the phone.  (I've learned a lot since then!!)

When I got it home I had a little buyer's remorse as I had no idea what to do with it!  It's been sitting in my shop holding my screwdrivers and collecting dust for the last 16 months.  Poor thing!

Well, I decided it was finally time to face my demons (you know--the ones that say, "It's too ugly!  You can't do anything with THAT!")  Oh, you don't hear those??  Forget I said anything, then. ;)

My inspiration finally came from these cute pillows I splurged for and bought off of Etsy.  





I just love the linen and the French Graphic (see this post).

  I actually took the pillow in and color matched it @ Sherwin Williams  (off of a card because you cannot get an accurate color from fabric).  I chose Accessible Beige and then added a little Intellectual Gray that I already had to take a little of the "pink" out of it.  


Here she is in all of her glory!  I know--bad, huh?  What was I thinking?!?  Oh my!!

I started sanding the top off (like I always do) and discovered a beautiful piece of cherry veneer!  I knew I wanted it to be dark (and cherry is a dark wood anyway) so I stained it Dark Walnut by Minwax and then gave it 3 coats of a semi-gloss poly.

*tip: when staining a top and painting the body I always sand and stain first (so you don't accidentally get stain on your new paint--cuz that stinks!)


Who knew that was under all that dust and yuck?!!



 After I painted the body I lightly painted the legs white and then sanded through--I don't do this look often because it doesn't fit my type A personality (wink, wink)  but I love it!  For some reason it reminds me of old Italian paintings  (why?  don't ask me--just does!)






 I adore her curvy bottoms!  I didn't prime this one so the paint looks very chippy--my favorite!







 I love the graphic on the pillow and thought it was the perfect thing to add to the door just to give it some interest.

 I've had just as much fun doing the insides as I have doing the outsides!  Can you tell I'm longing for warmer weather?!!  I gave it a little beachy feel. :)




I'm still contemplating keeping her as I need a new bedside table....we'll see...

Gun Cabinet turned Craft Cabinet

This gun cabinet has graced our home for the last 16 years. It belonged to my husband's father and was a hand-me-down. It's always been tucked away in a corner of a bedroom or in a basement. It was taking up much needed space behind my daughter's bedroom door, so I thought it was time for it to be repurposed (as it didn't even hold guns anymore, just a collecting spot for junk on the top!).

Once the idea popped into my head what to do with it I couldn't wait to get started (and even put a great friend's kitchen cabinet doors on the back burner for another day so I could do it!  Sorry Jeana!!).

We received a couple more inches of snow today (big BOO!) so I needed a serious dose of spring and this cabinet did the trick nicely!  Hope you enjoy her as much as I do!!

I used chalkboard paint (not to be confused with chalk paint--men don't seem to understand the difference-lol) on the glass door.  Ummm...I think my handwriting leaves a little to be desired, but I'm sure YOURS would look absolutely great on there!! ;)

*There are no tulips to be found anywhere in town, so I substituted parsley in my vase!  Take THAT winter!

Ok--I must admit, I was so excited to do this one.  I finished the inside first (and was loving it!) and then did the yellow on the outside and my enthusiasm waned just a little.  Maybe I'm just not a yellow fan?  It is a beautiful pale, creamy yellow which I do like...I think I am still on the fence.

What do you think?

Maybe I just have the when-will-this-winter-ever-end blues....





I added a few details just to give her some interest.  I found these wood appliques at Hobby Lobby, painted them white, distressed and stained them, and then used the pinner (all by  myself!!) to pin them on.


I like that they add just a little something.


 I used the same knobs as I did on the china hutch just because I <3 the way they look! ;)



Ok---here is my favorite part (besides the cute little knob I will show you in a minute)!

I pulled the back off and used spray adhesive to adhere the fabric.


This is my little bit of spring on the inside of this cabinet!!  I wish I could just crawl in there and pretend it was 72 degrees and sunny and I was lying in the grass somewhere!

Ok-enough day dreaming :(  .....

We gutted the inside and cut 3 new shelves and a piece to cover up the bottom.  Then we just pinned the shelves in place.

Isn't it adorable?!?!

My thinking is she would be perfect in a bathroom to hold linens, in the kitchen as a small pantry, in a craft room to hold all those glorious treasures, in a little girl's room for toys/clothes, or even in an entry way to hold hats, mittens, etc.

Anywhere you use her she is sure to add a ray of sunshine!!
