My client came in with her hubby and asked if I would be willing to do this cedar chest for a Christmas gift for someone special. Of course, I couldn't pass it up! How gorgeous is it?! :)
She was trying to decide on a color and I had the chalkboard I was working on sitting out. I asked her if she liked it and she said yes. She turned to him and asked him what he thought. He had the sweetest expression on his face and he said, "Well, it's not my thing, but I'm sure she would love it." What a guy!! :)
I sent Craig a picture of it and told him how excited I was to work on it. He said, "People will be mad about the before pic ;)." I said, "I know, but it's what she wants!" lol
Because I would NEVER paint such a piece. ;) ;) :)
It's all mahogany and I was hoping it wouldn't give me problems like the last umpteen pieces I've done. She behaved nicely and I had NO issues! Yea!!
Before
This is after a coat of shellac, so it looks better than it did when it arrived. It was in excellent condition though.
After
I decided to tone down the color of the chalkboard with a little green and I love how the new color turned out! So gorgeous! I've definitely decided that some/all shade(s) of blue-green is my fave color!
I picked out all the details in a soft white and then distressed. They just pop now--love that!
The texture of the original finish is amazing. I did no sanding to prep it. Just sprayed it with shellac to seal it and then painted. When I started sanding with a fine sanding block all the texture showed through the paint and I love how it looks.
I refinished the top with Espresso and it's so beautiful! It's pieced together so the wood grain is running 3 different directions.
(I needed something green so I whacked off my boxwood in the side yard. So handy! ;) )

I saw this chest at Silver Pennies and I love it! I have a cute little waterfall night table is fantastic condition and I cannot decide whether to paint it, partially or all, or just refinish it. What a dilemma! Your result is encouraging and not to mention gorgeous!
