Hutch Redo w/ Burlap

First of all, I feel like I've been MIA.  I've been working, but haven't been doing blog posts (this post is going to be short because my garage door was frozen shut so I didn't have good light for my pics).  I think this winter has finally taken its toll on me.  I haven't really been happy about going to the garage like I usually am.  It's so COLD!!  I'm hoping warmer weather will bring back my motivation!

Enough complaining, on to the makeover!  

 I've drooled over white, farmhouse style hutches on Pinterest and all over bloggy land for the past two years.  I wanted somewhere to store and display my white dishes (the few I've collected).  I have a small house and the layout doesn't leave me a lot of wall space.  I didn't think a hutch was really doable, so I've never really looked for one for myself.  A few weeks ago this hutch was posted on my local FB classifieds.  I snatched it up thinking to redo and sell it.  Thankfully it sat in my garage for a while while I was working on other things and during that time my wheels started turning.  I have a very small space between my bathroom door and my kitchen (I know, yuck that they're so close, right!) where I had a small, black antique dresser.  I liked it, but I started thinking maybe this hutch would fit there.  As soon as I thought it I ran out to my garage and measured.  Sure enough, it was the perfect size!  

I don't do this often, but I decided to KEEP IT! Yea me!!

This hutch is oak, which I've never had a problem with bleed through before.  This one was HORRIBLE!  It took 3 coats of shellac to fix it.  I was not happy.  And, because it took so many coats of shellac it made it hard to distress so I did it with my paint scraper instead.  I like the chippy look so it turned out to be a good thing.  I went a little heavier on the distressing cuz it's 

MINE! :)

 Originally I wanted the back to look like a grain sack.  I painted it the same color as my walls and then did a red stripe with two smaller stripes on the side.  I hated it.  Even after I distressed it it just looked flat.  I know I've said before that I love texture so I decided to go with burlap instead (<3 how organic it feels).

  I LoVe it!  It's casual and a great backdrop for my dishes. 

I know I do a lot of color, but I love white furniture.  It says simple and clean.  I was telling Ania it actually makes my dining room look bigger even though it's twice as big as the piece that was there before.  Go figure!  :)
