I was faced with a ginormously huge small dilemma as the weather started getting cooler this fall. This past spring I moved from my shop to my garage, which was fine when the weather was nice. But, as the temperatures began to drop I wasn't exactly sure what I was going to do (ummm...paint doesn't dry too well when it's 40 degrees).
In steps my hubby. Have I told you how wonderful he is? He really is. (Maybe, in part, because he doesn't want to hear me complain day after day, but that's beside the point!) He said he was leaving last Saturday and when he returned he had a truck full of insulation for our garage! And, he bought me a heater, too! See--he IS wonderful (for many more, and profoundly better, reasons than that!). ;)
I hadn't bought anything in a while because, at the time, I didn't know if I was going to be able to paint this winter. My garage was EmPtY! Can you believe that?? Well, that didn't last long. I was so excited about my new garage that I just had to jump on CL to see what was out there...
And, that's when I saw it.
You know that feeling, right? When you see the perfect piece(s) and you know, in your heart of hearts, that it just has to be yours! This was a whole bedroom set! My heart was pounding until I saw the price... big BOO! So, I moved on.
Lol, did you believe me??
Of course, I couldn't move on! I couldn't think about anything else. I finally emailed the couple and they were kind enough to knock the price down a little. I'm thinking...I'm thinking...I'm thinking....

AnYwHoO--I went to look at it in person and told the nice gentleman that I just couldn't pay that much for it. He said he would talk to his wife and text me with what she decided. I had to
w.a.l.k. a.w.a.y.!! :'(
He did end up texting and said his wife was willing to accept my offer! So...
I CAME HOME WITH IT! WOO HOO!
**I don't normally feel the need to justify myself, but I will at this time because I know I will be getting comments! Yes, I bought it with the intent of painting it and I did! What's that song??..."It's my perogative..." The top of this particular piece was ruined (water damage right down through the veneer to the sub layer), that wasn't something that could be restored and made my decision a lot easier.

My client liked this dresser I recently did, so that was her inspiration.

This just makes my heart HaPpY!!
She asked me what I thought of it (she hasn't seen it yet) and it took everything in me to not tell her I didn't want to give it to her! ;) :)
I am absolutely in love with this deep, rich color (I glazed it with a dark stain to deepen the color a little more) on this particular piece. It's bold without taking away from the lines.
Keeping the top and the trim pieces wood defines the curves and make each level pop.
I've never seen a vanity with a curved front like this before. I am still swooning!
I added these amazing knobs (again! you wouldn't believe how many of these I've purchased since the original dresser I did).
Another beautiful mahogany top. Can't get enough of them. I stained it with Espresso and gave it 3 coats of poly.
Ok. I'm going back into the garage to stare at it a while longer before it leaves. ;)

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely destroyed this piece!!! The refinished wood on top looks amazing! Should have done that on the whole thing. Not sure if it was laziness, or if you like to ruin beautiful wood pieces which are essentially works of art.
ReplyDeleteMike, I'm not sure if your comment is meant to elicit guilt or cause me to have a mighty change of heart about painting furniture. I am sorry to inform you it is has done neither. What is has done is reveal that you are an ass. I'm sure you are intelligent enough to realize you are on my personal page. While I am open to criticism and realize not everyone will be pleased with what I do I am not open to people, such as yourself, being rude and nasty. Normally I would delete such drivel, but I felt compelled to reply. I can assure you I am neither lazy nor am I the destroyer of all things beautiful. I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are not always so ignorant and mean spirited. You have no idea what condition this piece was in when I received it, or why I chose to paint what I did. So, five things. 1. As a self proclaimed expert in antique furniture I am sure you are aware this piece already had little value as much of the veneer was already damaged. That being the case I could not refinish the body as I did the top. 2. I'm not sure if you are aware that paint does not chemically altar the nature of wood in any way. If someone would like to strip it in the future they are welcome to do so. It will still be wood, therefore not "ruined" or "destroyed" (you should actually look up the definition of that word before carelessly throwing it around and making yourself look like an idiot). 3. The person who owns this now does believe it's a work of art and is enjoying it in her home. 4. It is none of your damn business what I do with anything which is legally and lawfully in my possession. 5. You can feel free to keep your small minded opinions to yourself next time and should probably think twice before opening your big pie hole. Ultimately it is a piece of wood, mahogany and maple to be exact (hardly exotic). I'm a little disturbed you are willing to cause hurt feelings over a piece of wood and one that has no value to you personally at that. You've accomplished nothing this morning but reveal your intrinsic nature (which, btw, is not good). So, be along your merry little way and feel free not to revisit me. Or do take a look around and be aghast at all the "art" I've ruined over the last three years. I will leave you by saying thank you for the lovely compliment on how the top turned out. It is very pretty.

ReplyDeleteI know I'm waaaay late to the game on this post, but I have to say, I LOVE this piece. I have always been anti paint when it comes to antique/vintage furniture. I still am, providing the item is in really good condition, and can be easily (is there such a thing as easy in the re-do world) refinished. This is what changed my mind, and gave me the ok to paint! Such a beautiful job was done on this piece. I love the 2 tone finish. Fantastic re-do!!
