A Little Bit of Sunshine

I like the idea of yellow.  But, I don't like yellow.

I always think I want to paint a piece yellow, but never do, because when it comes right down to it yellow is hard.  I don't like it too bright and I don't like it too....well, yellow.  I know, it makes no sense. That is why it's crazy that when I saw this little empire dresser I knew it needed to be yellow!

I decided on a light creamy yellow, but a little on the brighter side.  I absolutely adore it paired with the scrapbook paper I used on the drawers and contrasted against the rich wood top.  I think it's a winning combo!

I've been doing so many customs lately that it was nice to exercise my creativity a little.

 BEFORE

It was so dark and dreary....

 AFTER

I really love turquoise and yellow together.  Such a happy combo!

The color is Aubusson from Fusion Mineral Paint.  I'm fairly new to Fusion, but have loved trying their products.  I highly recommend going to their website and reading about their amazing paint.  I love there logo"Foundation to Finish All in One".  It really is a great product.  I love that it is an acrylic, but has properties of a chalk paint as well.  It has a great consistency, good coverage, and they have some amazing colors!  For this dresser I layered it over a custom yellow just to give a little dimension around the edges when I distressed.

I used Modge Podge to adhere the paper to the top two drawers.  The pattern is subtle and just gives a little visual interest.

I sanded down the top and it was looking rough, but 2 coats of Java Gel from General Finishes fixed her right up.  I sealed it with 3 coats of General Finishes top coat in Flat.

Creamy Butter Highboy

I'm afraid of yellow.

There I said it! :)  Maybe, I'm not afraid of it, maybe I just don't like it very much.  I'm not sure, but I've tried painting a few pieces yellow and ended up painting over them because I just wasn't feeling it.  BUT, I thought I'd give it a go again.  I'm taking baby steps though and wanted a really light, buttery yellow to get my feet wet.

This cute, little dresser was the perfect candidate.  I can't believe what a difference this pretty, subtle color did for it!

 After

This color makes me want to lick it.  But, I controlled myself cuz that would just be weird.  ;)

I used these knobs on this dresser and really wanted the contrast with the yellow, too.  I originally had different knobs in mind, but they didn't have 8 of them.  I'm so glad now-these are perfect!

I tried a stencil on the top drawer (after spending 1/2 the day fixing the stinking thing) and ended up not liking it.  I settled for using different knobs instead.

It had a nice wood top so I did my favorite thing and stained it dark (I started using Java Gel and love it!).  It's such a pretty contrast to the creamy paint.

It has such a cute, curvy base.

Can't wait for my tulips to come up this spring!

Antique Night Stand in Overjoy

A friend dropped this cute little night stand off for me and said it belonged to her great grandmother so it has sentimental value.

The poor little thing was in pretty rough shape with lots of peeling veneer (and some majorly stuck drawers!).  I ended up peeling the veneer off the drawer fronts but was able to save the top by gluing it back down.  It's not perfect, but I love that I was able to preserve part of the original piece.

She requested a fun color and I think it's perfect for this piece!

I carefully sanded the top down and stained it in Espresso (after I filled the crack in the back with stainable wood filler).  You can still see the crack, but I thought it actually blended pretty well.  It's a beautiful top.

I love the original pulls and the patina they have so I left them as is.  I wanted to keep as much as the original stand as possible.

 Another cute leg!

The cheery yellow looks so great over the dark finish that was already on it.  I like how the distressing breaks up all that yellow so it's not too overwhelming.

I'm so glad this piece that has been hanging around for so long will now be used and loved (and seen!).
