From Country to French Country

Is this déjà vu?  I think I've done one of these before! :)  The last one was pretty popular.  It sold a few minutes after I posted it and I immediately had a request for another one.  Luckily I happened to have another chest in my shop.  She had been laughed at before (poor thing), but now she's got her own makeover and a new owner. :)  Don't you just love happy endings?!

Antique Empire Dresser

This poor dresser was in rough shape when I got it.  I thought it might be headed to the burn pile.  A lot of the veneer was literally falling off and there was something living on the inside of it! After the last vanity I did I told myself I wasn't going to strip veneer  again for awhile.  But, this dresser was sitting at the front of my pile, so I thought I might as well tackle it and get it out of the way.  I love the shape of it but, to be honest, I didn't know if I could fix it.  It is such a solid piece that I didn't want to hand it over to the boys to chop into firewood. ;)

All that being said, I forgot to take a before pic (hate when that happens!!), unless this counts....

 Yeah, it was a mess...and this is only part of it.   I had to hammer one of the knobs off, too.  This job is so much fun sometimes. :)

 I was just going to do a linear distressing (just along the lines of the piece) but it distressed so easily that I just kept going--love the rub through on the drawers!

 I love how chunky these are.

 I wanted to do crystal knobs but, in the end, I decided these were a better fit. (And, of course, I love the cup pulls.)

Ok, the mirror was seriously so stinking heavy that I couldn't put it up and attach it by myself (and DH is still gone bear hunting) so here it is on my ugly shop floor.

Blood, Sweat, and Tears

Remember when I said I wouldn't be peeling veneer again anytime soon?  Well guess what this is?

Yup, that's what it is.  I jumped right back in again (isn't that what you're supposed to do when you have a really bad experience? lol). 

There were no tears, but I did gouge myself with the chisel twice--so there was blood. And, it's been so stinking hot and humid that I think there was a little bit of sweat, too. :)  This stuff came off a little easier than the last one, but it's still a pain.  

Can't wait until it's done. :)  Maybe tomorrow....

Scalloped Antique Dresser

I picked this dresser up a while back.  I loved the shape of it, but it had its own issues.  ;)  I knew she could be a beauty though.  It's been sitting in my shop and I finally suggested it to my client who was looking for a dresser for her little girl.  

I ended up doing multiple coats of 3 different products on this dresser because it kept bleeding through--that's my worst pet peeve!  Another one that I had to walk away from for a little while. ;)

 I've been so lucky with all the beautiful wood I've been finding under ugly, old varnish!

 I normally don't distress this much so I was excited when she said that's what she wanted.  I love it---more my style. ;)

 Love these details on the corners.

 We kept the original knobs on the top  (which I think look great with the white) and swapped out the originals on the bottom drawers for these ceramic ones.   I like how the upper knobs tie into the base of the knobs on the bottom drawers.

Great scallop on the mirror and the skirt.

 Always a sucker for a great spindle!!

Third Time's a Charm

You remember this guy, right?

       

                                 Well, I wasn't happy, so I decided simple was best...  :)  Ok, ok, I really was just sick of it and couldn't look at it anymore so I cleaned up the drawers and called it good (after I put some cute knobs on it so I didn't feel guilty!). ;)

Antique Vanity w/ Polka Dots ;)

This cute little vanity had been sitting in a damp basement for a long time.  When it came to me the veneer was peeling off and the drawers were stuck tight (I mean tight!!).  I made a deal with my handyman to help me "unstick" the drawers (he ended up taking the bottom off and prying them out with a lever...nice) and I ended up having to peel about 3/4 of the veneer off.  That. Sucked. A. Lot.  Thankfully I had my handy iron (which is now the shop iron because I ruined it--oops) and wet dish towel to help me out, but, It. Still. Sucked....A.  Lot.  However, now that it's all done I love how it turned out, and I'm glad I didn't throw it in the dumpster behind the shop (which, at one point, I was ready to do.  It literally almost brought me to tears).  I won't be peeling veneer again anytime soon!

These are seriously the cutest knobs!  I love that when she gets a little older they can easily be replaced (same with the fabric on the stool).

Sweet little knob on the center drawer (yep, had to peel the veneer off that, too!).

This grapevine detail is so cute--perfect for a little girl.
