Bar Makeover in Black

Quick little post this afternoon to start my weekend (my mom is coming to visit me for a week! yea!).

My friend said that this has been in her husband's family for a while.  She said her hubby doesn't like change (I can relate), but she was ready to see this little bar get a redo.  I love when I get to update a family piece and hopefully hubby will be on board with the new look. :)

She said she wanted a Pottery Barn finish (I have to sadly admit that a year ago I didn't even know what that meant! lol).  Just love it in black!

French Chic Desk

Sometimes I know exactly what I want to do with a piece as soon as I see it.  Sometimes I have a thousand thoughts about it and it takes me forever to make up my mind.

When I saw this one I just knew.  I've done two other pieces this style in the last few weeks and it just seems this is the time of the year for them to start popping up at garage sales.  This one was in the back of the garage and it was a fat mess.

I brought it home and the more I worked on it the bigger the mess I realized it was.  The top had almost completely come off, the bottom was detached, the paint was peeling, yah-you get the picture.  It's a good thing I got her for a steal, although a few times I thought, "I'm not out much if I just chuck it in the garbage!"

So glad I didn't!  It just makes me smile to see her now!  What a change!

 Before
*this isn't the actual pic cuz I had it apart almost immediately when I got home, but it looked exactly like this only way worse! :)

 After

Ok, I didn't know what color right away (I was debating between pink and aqua for a little girl and I decided I didn't want to do pink), but I knew how I wanted it to look. I am loving this soft aqua (I just mixed a few other colors I had to get rid of some of them!).

 Just adore these crystal knobs against the stripes and black edging!

 This skirt is just particle board, and it was all bubbly.  So, I sanded it gently, primed twice, and painted two coats.  It's still bumpy, but at least I know she's covered and protected.

I couldn't find a chair for pics so I redid my daughter's chair and told her I would get her a new one. :)

Love this sweet little fabric.

Antique Buffet

I had posted another buffet I did on my local FB classifieds page and had a response from a man asking me if I had something similar he could use in his "mancave".  Haha--I don't think I've done "mancave" yet!  He wanted something large to display his sports memorabilia on.

Well, you don't find very many antique buffets this large very often, but fate was smiling down on me. :)  It didn't have too many details, so  I didn't think it looked too girly and I thought by changing out the hardware I could really update it.

Before

I actually took the veneer off the top strip and the bottom piece as it was chipped and peeling and the detail looked like it had been chewed on by something.  I also sanded the top down and stained it in an Early American/Red Mahogany mix (by Minwax).

 After

Love how putting new knobs and cup pulls on really changes the feel of the piece.

I think it's pretty sleek looking now and I hope he likes it!

Antique Wardrobe

My client said this wardrobe had been sitting in her grandparent's cabin for the last 30 years. It was definitely time for a makeover!  She wanted to freshen it up and give it a little bit of a rustic look for their spare bedroom.  We bounced around some ideas and ended up deciding on a soft gray with wood drawer fronts.

I happened to have a little Paris Gray ASCP left, but not enough, so I just mixed it with some latex I had left over (in a very similar color).  Yes, you can do that in case you were scared to try!  It doesn't distress quite as easily as straight chalk paint, but easier than regular latex.

Oh, a little paint never ceases to amaze me!!

 This piece had very little detail so I like how the wood drawer fronts add a little bit of visual interest.

 Love those curves!

  Distressing chalk paint is so much fun (well, I think so anyway!) and it has such a natural look.

I love how it's soft and rustic at the same time--not too masculine or feminine.

color = mostly Paris Gray
stain = Dark Walnut Minwax
