Depression Era Hutch Redo

I'm a Jane Austen fan (sometimes I think I was born in the wrong place and the wrong century, but then I realize I am way too sassy to have lived in England in the 1800's!  No man would have ever married me!).  Pride & Prejudice is my favorite story (how can you not love a witty young lady and a dashingly handsome, rich young man?) ;) .  I've watched the BBC version and won't tell you how I felt about it (although it's grown on me a little-lol).  But, I really enjoyed the Keira Knightly version. I know. I know. ;)

I absolutely fell in love with this room--more particularly the color and texture of the walls!

They inspired me on this piece.

Sorry, this post is going to be a little pic heavy because I just couldn't help myself--it's so lovely! :)

Before

 After

This is my second time using ASCP.  I have been secretly coveting a quart of Duck Egg and I finally broke down and ordered it.  I couldn't be more thrilled with it!  I love the variation in the color after you  wax or clear coat it (I've done both).  It distresses so well and really does have that vintage look.

There was a little "inset" at the bottom of the piece so I used the opportunity to turn it into a french label.  I just white washed the spot before using wax paper to transfer the graphic.

Another set of great legs!  Ooh la la!!

The hardware couldn't be more perfect for this piece.  At first, I put the original hardware back on.  I stared at it for about 30 sec and then decided it just didn't "fit" anymore.  So, off with the old and in with the new!  It's so feminine (and my dear hubby informed me this color was "girly" so it is absolutely perfect!!).

I used a wet rag to distress and it looks so natural and left the dark finish underneath (where a sanding block would have removed a lot of that dark stain).

I hope she finds a good home (or, just maybe, I secretly don't because then I will be forced to keep her!)

  9. I thought I knew what I wanted to say but your friend Pink*Cherub*Moon said it all quite succinctly and perfectly. I would so love to have that piece but think it might be a bit pricey for me to have you ship it or for me to come up there to get it. You're not having real nice weather right now either according to our weather man so guess I'll have to love it from afar. Whomever buys that piece is one very lucky person. I am down right envious. Your choice of knobs is perfect for that piece.
    Happy March

  15. You certainly did justice to this beautiful piece. It's a charming design and you've sympathetically transformed it without over-doing the distressing.

The colour reminds me of my new favourite-colour-of-all-time called Summer Sky: it's a chalk paint too, I've been using the brand you mentioned earlier for a very long time but the limited colour choice led me to do some in-depth research in the market and I discovered AUTENTICO chalk paints.

The range is vast - more than 120 different AUTENTICO colours, so NO more random mixing. It behaves better too, it does not go on thick and gloopy, it glides on smoothly and the finish after two coats, and waxing, is gorgeous and more to the point is more robust.

Back to your piece: I haven't seen anything like this in UK and I'm a collector at Auction so I get to see a vast range of furniture coming through.

What do you call a piece like that, and what was it's traditional use?

    Happy painting gals!

    1. This is a mahogany Depression-era china cabinet (c. 1930s). They were mass-produced, and finding one in good condition can be a challenge. Women stored their china and silver in them, as well as any other important serving pieces. Nowadays people use them all over the house, but the original owner would have almost exclusively kept them in the dining room. These pieces were primarily owned by the middle class, and would have been a show piece, not only because the piece itself is beautiful, but the china inside was displayed for guests to see (chalk that up to Americans' insistence on conspicuous consumption). The middle class generally lived in smaller houses (basically a living room, dining room, kitchen, and 2 or 3 bedrooms and a bath) and would not have had a butler's pantry like the wealthy or upper middle classes had. They are very popular right now because they look fabulous painted!

I wonder if the paint you mentioned is sold in the colonies (haha).

I have a mild obsession with this paint color right now, too. My brother bought me a quart of it for Christmas and it's so rich, especially with the wax applied. This piece looks great! I much prefer using a wet rag to distress. Less mess!

    2. What a beautiful surprise! I have the same piece in my garage right now (see "before" shot above). It's been handed down though my family over the years & while its got good bones, it is in desperate need of some tlc. I absolutely love what you have done to this & am so glad to have found more info on it. Thanks!
